The Dark Knight is another name for the DC comic character in tights, Batman. It all started when the Batman character started to be drawn darker. The story line also became more bleak and gothic. Batman first developed this darkness in 1989 and it continued to be dark until its end in 2005. This darker version of Batman was extremely popular.
This vigilante character started with a prequel of how he was created and continued to a point where there was a battle between him and Mr. Freeze. The series introduces many of the well known characters from Arkam Asylum. This is the child of the pen and ink people at DC comics that gradually became a darker version of this well loved character.
At this point in the Batman comics the dark underside of Batman comes out. The actual drawings behind the comics were dark. They used dark blues and blacks to set a mood of bleakness. Batman underwent drastic visual changes as a character. He went from a lighter grey to a dark blue or black with drastic ears and cape. It is said that this was how Batman was originally meant but no one has confirmed this.
The Dark Knight and Batman series of movies started in this darker environment. The originals were just called Batman but they had the same dark context that the others do. It was copied by filmmakers into Batman Begins and the second in the saga. It is said that there will be a third movie made to round things out in 2010.
The character was resurrected in 2008 for the blockbuster film Batman the Dark Knight. This movie received a lot of press both before and after it was released. Director and co-author Christopher Nolan says that he based the movie off of the 1940s Joker and the 1996 section of the popular DC comics.
There are two movies in this trilogy already made. There is also an animated feature set called Batman Gotham Knight. These six series segments will fit anywhere in between the movies. Rumor has it that they are making the third one in 2010 and it will be written by Jonathan Nolan. People say that it will end the Dark Knight saga and finish out the series.
As the film and second installment in the trilogy progressed and was released it became clear that it would be a blockbuster. This was realized when it grossed the most out of any movie in 2008. It is commonly known as the third biggest grossing movie of all time. This is another fact that is open for debate. It was only the second film to gross more than 500 million in North America. It won two academy awards and was nominated for six others. It was involved in about a dozen other film awards and recognitions.
There is Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and a set of six animated episodes in the series. The animated series is called Batman Gotham Knight and is set in and around the two movies already filmed. It can be said to be a filler series. The third installment is to end the saga and will be written by Jonathan Nolan. It is said to have the same dark side to it but is should complete the series.
